Brett Favre

-Vitali Skyarov
Minister of Power Ukraine. Chernobyl

– Harry Warner
Warner Bro.

– William Ortan
– Telegraph Company (ग्राहम बेल चे फोनचे पेटंट नाकारताना)

How the Yes Bank crisis has caused a domino effect

Masses were only reviving and starting to gain their faith in the financial system of the country when we witnessed yet another setback, this time to the banking segment of the nation. Private banking player Yes Bank, which once had a dominant position in the country saw its NPAs climbing fast with the bank’s primary lenders currently undergoing steep valuation declines or started undergoing an investigation itself.

The resultant cash crunch was responsible for the trickle-down effect that not only affected the direct account holders but had an impact on various other fronts as well.

The first and foremost effect of the Yes Bank crisis was on Life Insurance Corporation of India. The insurer has usually seen a high amount of revenue collection coming in the month of March every year. The premiums usually flow in these days as online payments. With the automation of processes, the bank for NACH debit and cheque clearances for LIC was Yes Bank which is expected to affect the collections for the corporation for the month of March for Q4 ‘20.

LIC had also earlier sent a message stating there would be a delay in premium debit for policies. This would add to the distress that the crisis has already been causing.

Another impact is on the account holders as the bank is under a moratorium restricting the monthly withdrawal to Rs 50,000, subject to certain exceptions and prior approvals from RBI. This is not only bound to hinder the day to day activities for people whose, primary bank accounts were in yes Bank, but may also hamper small businesses.

Not only would this affect the daily lifestyle, but it may also demotivate the people who wanted to apply for the SBI Card IPO. Out of all the applications for allotments received for the IPO, applications worth Rs 1,500 crore were through people with their accounts in Yes Bank.

Even though the company said that if the applicants are able to pay the amount through an alternative bank account the allotment would still be done, this may not be a practically feasible option for many in such a short notice. Thus, the crisis is expected to have its effects on the IPO too, affecting the listing price and number of participants to a huge extent.

On the other side however, one should also keep in mind that a good participation even if after the effects of the crisis, may help Yes Bank in the long run. This can be said based on the fact that SBI would be infusing capital in the beleaguered bank soon, taking a 49 percent stake as a part of restructuring scheme that has been proposed. The collections of the IPO would thus help SBI fund this move too. However, whether each process would be executed successfully is based upon the IPO’s performance in the current bearish markets.

Key reasons why markets slumped today

Equity benchmark indices plunged on Monday due to heavy selling pressure on the back of increasing concerns that global economic growth could be impacted by the rising number of coronavirus cases outside China. Also, F&O expiry could induce some volatility during the week.

All sectors ended in the red, however, metal, pharma, banking and realty were the worst hit in today’s session.

The Sensex ended 807 points lower or 1.96% at 40,363 and the Nifty tanked 252 points or 2% at 11,829, clocked its worst fall since the Budget day.

Here are the top factors that led the market to fall in today’s trade:

Global markets: The global markets took a hit amid media reports citing that South Korea put the country on high alert after the number of infections hit more than 700 and deaths rose to seven, and in Italy, the number of cases jumped to above 150 from just three last week. Asian markets ended with losses while European indices traded with losses between 3.20-3.85%. Nasdaq and Dow futures were also down over 1.5%.

Rupee: The Indian rupee extended its decline amid heavy selling in domestic equities and strengthening of the American currency in the overseas market. The currency fell by 21 paise at 71.87/$.

Fall in metal & pharma stocks: In today’s trade, the metal and pharmaceutical stocks have been the most affected due to their direct dependence on China for raw material imports. The metal stocks were leading the decline on the NSE, with JSW steel, Hindalco, Tata Steel and Vedanta shedding between 6-9% each on the NSE.

Macro data in focus: Investors will be looking forward to the Gross Domestic data for the third quarter of FY20 to be out later in the week.

Gold price: International gold prices reached a fresh seven-year high and silver also scaled a new high. Gold prices surged over 2% to their highest in over seven years in the international market at $1,678.58. Dollar strengthened on a safe investment bet compared to other currencies as dollar sets unaffected by the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, media reports mentioned that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the coronavirus epidemic could put an already fragile global economy recovery at risk. Global growth was poised for a modest rebound to 3.3% this year, up from 2.9% last year.

On the flip side, any positive outcome from the US president’s India visit in terms of strategic partnership/trade deal could cheer the Indian markets.

YES Bank calls shareholders meet on February 7 for nod on fundraising

YES Bank has, it told the stock exchanges, convened an extraordinary general meeting of its shareholders on February 7 on fund raising for Rs 10,000 crore, and to authorise an expansion in its authorised capital from Rs 800 crore now to Rs 1,100 crore.

Last week, it notified the exchanges that its board of directors had approved the raising of funds up to Rs 10,000 crore in one or more tranches, through Qualified Institutional Placement, Global Depository Receipts, American Depository Receipts, Foreign Currency Convertible Bonds or any other method on a private placement basis.

Earlier, it was in talks with several investors in this regard but after months of uncertainty, scaled down the fund raising plan substantially. There had been offers from Erwin Singh Braich, Citax Holdings and Citax Investment Group. Braich updated its offer but the bank decided not to proceed with this. Citax’s offer will be taken up later, as “relevant conditions precedent could not be completed”. The bank’s core equity capital is 8.7 per cent of the total, against the minimum regulatory requirement of 8 per cent.

Its shares closed 8.4 per cent down on Tuesday, at Rs 38.55 on the BSE exchange.

YES Bank acquires 30% in Reliance Power arm

Yes Bank on Tuesday said it had acquired around 30 per cent stake in a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Power pursuant to invocation of pledged shares.

The bank has acquired 12,73,21,500 equity shares having nominal value of Rs 10 each per share constituting around 29.97 per cent of the post-issue paid-up share capital of Rosa Power Supply Company (RPSCL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Power, YES Bank said in a regulatory filing.

“Shares have been acquired pursuant to invocation of pledge of shares to RPSCL subsequent to default/breach of terms of credit facilities sanctioned by YES Bank to Reliance Power,” it added. Incorporated in 1994, RPSCL is engaged in the business of power generation. The plant (1,200 Mw) in Uttar Pradesh, owned by the RPSCL generated 4,341 million units for the year ended March 31. Karvy delays payouts to 95,000 retail customers

Around 95,000 clients of Karvy Stock broking Ltd, almost all of them retail investors, are staring at uncertainty as they wait to regain access to their shares and receive payouts from the broking firm.

While customers can typically change their broker by opening an account with a rival brokerage by obtaining a client master report and initiating a closure-cum-transfer request, several of Karvy’s clients have alleged that the firm is deliberately delaying payouts and preventing them from moving to another broking firm.

“Karvy is not moving shares from the pool account to DP Holding (demat account). Only when these transfers happen can we start trading with another brokerage firm,” a Mumbai-based investor said on condition of anonymity. “Not just that, payout requests are also not being honoured, purchased securities are also not being delivered in the demat account of investors.” he alleged.

Some more investors, who spoke to Mint, said several complaints have been lodged against Karvy with markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) about this issue and action in this regard is awaited.

A 22 November Sebi order barred the firm from taking on new clients and trading on behalf of existing investors. The order, however, did not restrict the firm from making timely payouts to investors.

Deepesh Kumar, a Mumbai-based client of Karvy, shared a similar experience: “Regulators should ensure that money in trading accounts of clients are transferred to clients’ linked bank accounts. According to Sebi’s broker regulations, quarterly transfers are required to be made from the pool account to clients’ accounts even if clients have not made such a request.

“Karvy may misguide the regulators by falsely claiming that clients have not initiated requests for refund.”

The Sebi order came after it was found that the broking firm had used client stocks to raise funds and transferred them to other group businesses. The total misappropriation, according to the preliminary findings of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), which conducted an audit, stands at ₹2,000 crore, making it one of the largest defaults by a stock broking firm in India.

Currently, Karvy has close to 244,000 clients, a large chunk of which are retail investors with investment size ranging from a few thousand rupees to a crore.

“Investors are unfortunately at the receiving end of this scam as they are unable to withdraw funds or transact in securities that rightfully belong to them. This is akin to robbery of their savings and investments,” said Shriram Subramanian, founder and managing director of InGovern Research Services Pvt. Ltd, a corporate governance firm. “Also, there is uncertainty on the scale of this scam by Karvy. It is also highly likely that many other broking firms are adopting such crooked practices.”

Industry watchers say the most problematic transactions, which could create hurdles for investors, involve those where stocks worth ₹1,096 crore were sold and proceeds transferred to Karvy Realty, a group company. These transactions are the focus of a forensic audit being done by EY India Ltd as ordered by NSE.

Karvy, on its part, is promising investors to make the payouts soon, asking them to remain patient. In an emailed response, a spokesperson for Karvy said the company will make a payout of ₹25 crore to 200 clients, due under Sebi regulations, in two weeks.

However, the Karvy group is facing liquidity issues, which may make it harder for it to meet payment obligations. The liquidity problems for the firm started with its commodity broking business in the third week of November when it delayed payouts to some of its clients for 10 days or more.

Rating agencies Icra Ltd and Crisil Ltd have downgraded the stock broker and bank facilities of its group businesses.

Icra on Wednesday downgraded two instruments of Karvy Stock Broking on the basis of a recent Sebi interim order.

Meanwhile, the broking firm on Thursday filed an appeal in the Securities Appellate Tribunal against Sebi’s interim directions.
